There’s a reason people bring up Huntington when they want a North Shore town with something going on. Downtown gives you places to meet for dinner, spend an afternoon, and keep exploring. Yet the experience of living in Huntington isn’t limited to its busiest streets.
Head away from the center and the setting changes. A home closer to downtown can offer a very different daily routine from one on a quieter residential road or nearer the harbor. That range is what makes Huntington interesting to explore—and why I’d never tell a buyer they’ve “seen Huntington” after visiting just one part of it.

A town with more than one rhythm
Huntington can give you a full afternoon without much of a plan: spend time downtown, browse, stop for a meal, and walk over toward Heckscher Park. The park sits a short walk from downtown and includes a pond, gardens, and the Heckscher Museum of Art.
But whether you’d want that activity right outside your door is a separate question. Some buyers want to be close to it; others want to enjoy downtown and return to a quieter street. Huntington gives us room to have that conversation instead of assuming everyone is looking for the same version of North Shore life.
Where in Huntington feels right to you?
I would start your search with a simple question: How close do you want to be to downtown? From there, we can look at the home itself—its layout, condition, outdoor space, and setting—and compare the tradeoffs of each location.
If you’re drawn to the waterfront, we should be specific about what that means to you. A harbor view, proximity to the water, and actual waterfront property are very different searches. We can also look at practical details tied to an individual address, including taxes, flood information where relevant, and the property’s condition.
The right Huntington home should make sense for your everyday life, not just look good during a showing.
Start downtown, then keep going
For a first visit, I’d spend time around downtown Huntington and Heckscher Park. Together, they give you a feel for the activity and the green space near the center. Then drive the residential streets you might actually consider calling home.
If waterfront access matters to you, make a separate trip toward the harbor area. The Town of Huntington lists Gold Star Battalion Beach on West Shore Road among its local beach locations; access and use rules should be checked directly with the town.
Try visiting at the times you’d normally be out—on an ordinary weekday as well as a weekend. It’s an easy way to learn whether you prefer being near the action or having a little distance from it.
What should you consider before buying in Huntington?
Do you want to walk to downtown, drive there easily, or live farther from its activity?
Is your priority the house itself, the amount of outdoor space, or the surrounding setting?
Are you picturing a harbor connection, or do you simply want access to waterfront places?
How does the street feel at the times you’d normally be home?
What do the taxes, condition, insurance needs, and property-specific details mean for your budget?
You don’t need every answer before you begin. These are the questions we can use to make your search more focused.
